Front page construction

How i made my front page...

In order to achieve my front page I needed to make some adjustments to the picture that I chose...

I chose my front page picture and edited out all of the face blemishes and altered the background colour to a lighter grey. I also brightened the models face and filled in some of the make-up mistakes. Here are some of the tools and methods I used to edit my Music magazine front page image.

I then had to decide on which layout I would have the magazine front page and I chose to have the one in the top left. With the title on the left, writing and barcode on the left and the picture centred.

The above photo is of one of the magazine front covers from my research. The text on this magazine is situated on the left at the bottom of the page, and I used this as a guidance to making my own body of text for the front cover of my magazine. The font is quite simple and the Text varies in size and wieght. Next to it is what I made based on this idea. Aswell as this I put the barcode underneath with the number of the magazine and the date above it.

First Draft...

This is the first draft of my front page. I am pleased with the positioning of the picture and the title size. The text on the left hand side I think needs to be a bit bigger and bolder as it is small in comparison to the title and the white writing in the bottom right.

I like the font of the writing but I think if I made it bolder and bigger it would not look so faded and small. I chose to have only black and white writing because her hair is dark and they blend well together. I didn’t want to have too many colours, another option was to have the text in red however when I did this the model’s lips didn’t stand out as much as when the lip colour was the only red thing on the page.
I am also not sure of the writing in white at the bottom. In my research the writing was in a similar font to this but slightly bolder. Also this writing is positioned at a straight level and mine is slanted to the left. In the research there is only one word in a large font and the rest is in small, in mine it isn’t that small in comparison to the word ‘Wynter’. This is something I am going to change for my final front cover.

CHANGING MY SUBTITLE

Here is the orginal first draft shot of the 'wynter goes solo' that I want to change.

Here I have changed the font to 'mistral' which is similar but still not exactly the ame as the research one. I also made it completely horizontal.

This is the tool I used to make the text wider to match the text on my research.

I then rotated it to make it slightly slanted to the left like in the research. I am happier with this writing than the previous one and I think it looks less out of place this way.

CHANGING THE LEFT HAND SIDE TEXT

I changed it by giving the letters more weight and I also changed the size and moved it all over to the left.

This is the finished text that I chnaged.
These are the only two changes that I wanted to make to my front page. However I think that the writing in the right hand corner should be larger so I changed it 4 times and came to a conclusion to have the biggest one.

After making all of the changes that I wanted to, I realised that a comman comment on my front cover was that is was too empty and there are gaps that need filling. For example, above the text on the left there is a lot of space and directly on the other side, a smaller amount of open space. So I looked back at my research at one of the front pages and focused on the text down the side of the models arm on the right. Because the space that I have is narrow I think it would be easier to re-create this.
First I began by making a small rectangle and tried to match it to the colour of the lipstick.
Then I simply typed in the text that I wanted to use and alternated the colour from black to the same red used before. Then in order to create the complete product I would need to make sure it is larger so it can be seen easily and that it did not look so spacious. I did this by adjusting the font size to 14 and changing the height of the text to 150%.

To fill the space above the writing on the left I looked back at one of my research pictures at the 'BIG IN '09' part. I decided to make a similar thing on my own magazine but using 2012 instead and only having 2 different peices of text. This was fairly simple and I just drew out a text boz and wrot 'BIG IN '12' in a large font and bellow it I put two lines of info, in a smaller font size.

The finished product

Front page title development

These are all of the names that i came up with...
In order to decide what font colour and size to have my title I randomly selected different ones in the word of my title. I then decided on three quite similar fonts that I liked which were 'Estrangelo Edessa', 'vrinda' and 'verenda'.

After choosing the three fonts that I liked best I then began to play around with them trying different effects and colours...
To create the fading effect that I have done I used 3 simle steps.

First I seleceted a colour scheme in the circled area...
Then I clicked on the 'Gradient Swatch tool' ...
Lastly I clicked across the box of writing that I wanted to change. I did this many times to see what ones I liked best.

I didn't like any of the fade colour ones and decided that i would just have th lai white on black title, which is the same as the ones i liked in my research. I am going to focus on this one now and change it slightly so that it looks better.
FINAL TITLE FOR FRONT PAGE

I am pleased with how I have made my Front page title, because it's bold and eye catching and matches well with the ones I found in my research.
